The idea for these photographs came to me in the early 1950s from my wife Anna-Eva Bergman, when we spent our holidays on a beach in the Mediterranean.
Every day we collected pebbles. Anna-Eva collected monster heads that seemed to come straight from the legendary world of her Nordic childhood.
As for me, in my quest for abstract purity and in keeping with my taste for perfection, I stubbornly collected the most beautiful stones, oval and round.
I reproached my wife for her weakness for the morbid. Soon I began to get bored. Then, in the long run, we reversed the roles, I was lamentably contaminated by her figurative penchant and I became a great lover of Trolls and other Apollons.
As I was more gifted than she was in this technique, it was I who fixed the image of these strange beings. Later Albert Skira was kind enough to print them and Jean Tardieu to comment on them, in verse and prose.
