Dominique Aubier, « Hans Hartung » (extract), Caméra n°8, august 1960

Truth be told, the discovery of these stones in the sand was due to Anna-Eva Bergman—his wife, herself also a painter. It was she who pointed out to her husband the fabulous figures, the fascinating shapes, in which the painter had no interest at the time. He photographed them to ‘fix’ his wife’s insightful gaze upon these forms produced by matter. And it was thus, won over by the intelligibility of these holiday discoveries, that he too began to detach stones from the beach to create his own small museum of lapidary shapes, and also to photograph them.
